INTER-DOJO TOURNAMENT 2009
In early 2009 we will be holding another inter-dojo tournament to build on the successes that Crawley & Brighton have had at Regional and National level.

Running tournaments costs money, money that we could otherwise use to help fuel our World Cup Fund so next year we're hoping that individuals and local business will get involved and support us.

In return for patronage, we can offer free advertising or publicity through our web site and dojos. There are lots of ways to help with the running of a tournament:

  • Contribute towards or buy prizes in a division and have it dedicated to you
  • Buy or supply drinks or food for thirsty competitors
If you are interested or feel you may be able to help, please get in contact with us at info@gkr-crawleyarea.co.uk

Get involved with the Fund-raising Forum
Many students have expressed an interest in being part of the fund-raising efforts for WC09 but so far their participation has been limited to the information they receive in classes. In order to involve students more fully we now have a Public Forum that students can sign up for.

If you have any ideas about fund-raising and are willing to do some work to get themselves or others to the World Cup, please get in contact with us through the link above, or by talking to you instructor in class so we can get you set up. All we need is your name, where you train and some contact details.

Only Crawley and Brighton Area students can join the Forum.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE
FROM SENSEI SIMON BURKE

GKR World Championships August 2009 - Melbourne, Australia
In October 2005 Region 36 (Crawley Area that was) sent 11 students to compete against the rest of the world in Sydney. Although no medals were brought back on this occasion, all competitors gained valuable experience which strengthen R36 competition strategy.

This was evident at the last World Championships held in Birmingahm in 2007 where we were sucessful in winning 7 medals in various categories and two trophies in the Junior Black Belt Open division. This may've seemd insignificant in comparison with other competitions, but this was the World Championships, where the Aussies (founders of GKR) usually dominate in each and every category.

In 2005, fundraising covered 80% of competitors flight and accommodation expenses for the trip. Fundraising has already begun for next years' trip, co-ordinated by a core group of people who are working very hard to match or exceed what we achieved.

We really need your help - please speak to family, friends and employers and try to obtain sponsorship or donations for raffles and auctions. Although our karate uniforms (gi's) cannot carry any form of advertising we are able to promote things in other ways - t-shirts, GB flags, badges, caps, bags, etc. If you are able to help in any way or have any ideas for fundraising, please speak to your instructor.

In order to set a realistic target for fundraising, we need to know how many student are interest in competing. If you would like to compete in Australia on 15th & 16th August 2009 please speak to your instructor and return the form they give you in class by 28th September.

Regards

Sensei Simon Burke
Region Manager, GKR Crawley & Brighton.

Buntai San Ju Roku
Team 36

What is Buntai San Ju Roku?
GKR's Crawley & Brighton Area is also know as Region 36 and thirty-six (or San Ju Roku) is, coincidentally, an important number in the history of Karate:

Thirty Six Families
The emperor of China sent Okinawa an imperial gift of skilled artisans and merchants. These people soon formed into a community known as the Thirty-Six Families. This community was responsible for the rapid spread of Chan Fa throughout Okinawa. It should be noted that "thirty-six" often means "a great many" and may not mean thirty-six numerically.

Team 36 means that we support each other, we are one team within the global GKR Family.

Take pride at being Team 36 - there is a whole range of Team 36 items available in our shop

The Buntai San Ju Roku design can be printed on all kinds of clothing from our shop - please email queries to info@gkr-crawleyarea.co.uk
